We have updated this program with new vignettes and a revised manual.
This set of DVDs consists of protocols for 20 weekly sessions for
parents with children diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder, or
attention deficit disorder, or for families referred by child protective
services, or for new immigrant families who find the material new. For
prevention purposes, there is a revised protocol permitting the program
to be delivered in 14 sessions for non high-risk families. The updated
program has new topics on persistence, social and emotion coaching as
well as how to set up predictable routines and ways to teach children
how to problem solve. Please see our web site for more particulars on
the revised program content and for revised parent handouts. Home Visitor Coaching Manual In addition, for the Early Childhood/Preschool Program there are protocols for home visitor coaches to do the program with parents at home. This home visiting coaching protocol is good to combine with the group program for families who miss group sessions, for families who have difficulties with some aspects of the program, and for families referred by Child Protective Services. For CPS referred families we are recommending 4 home visit coaching sessions which review each of the major topics. The home visitor coaching protocols may also be used for families who cannot attend groups for some reason. In addition there are parent work manuals for each major topic to use when doing this program with a coach at home. |
School Age BASIC Program (ages 6-12 years) |
|
![]() |
This program has been expanded and updated to include older children
up to 12 years. The protocols for this program consist of a minimum of
14 weekly sessions including the program on how to help children be
successful at school. For families who have intergenerational
disadvantage or who have children with conduct problems and ADHD we
recommend the ADVANCE curriculum in addition to the school age basic
program. In this revised School Age Basic program there is a selection
of vignettes for 6-8 year olds and a separate selection for 9-12 year
olds. It is ideal to separate out parents of these two age groups for
training. |

Supplemental Training for the New Programs |
|
![]() |
There are 1-day supplemental training days on the baby or toddler or preadolescent age groups for those already trained in the older version of the programs. During these trainings leaders practice leading the new vignettes and learn about new group process methods used in the program. Eligibility for the add-on trainings is based on your having had the Basic parent group leader training, and then also it is preferred that you have had some experience using the parenting programs. Please contact us if you are interested in more information on accessing these trainings. Since there may not be a cohort ready to receive the training for any one type for a while, we will keep a list of those interested and then plan for a training day or two when there is enough interest. Contact us at incredibleyears@incredibleyears.com to be put on a list. |

Are the new programs evidence-based?The toddler, early childhood or early school age programs have been evaluated in randomized control group trials for children ages 2 to 8 years. The revised programs still use all the core vignettes from the previous version that were evaluated in the research trials PLUS new vignettes that cover topics that parents have requested over the years. For example, vignettes on bathing, feeding and dressing children, separating from children, ways to teach children self-regulation skills and ways to promote positive peer relationships. The vignettes also include more cultural diversity in families represented as well as children with different developmental abilities. The baby and older age programs are currently being evaluated in United Kingdom and Wales. Working with child welfare populationFollow this link for a paper I have written about using this program with the child welfare populations or families referred because of problems with neglect and abuse. Read the paper. We have been working with this population in Washington State as well as New York State with good success and low drop out rates. As part of delivering this program in a group format which helps parents feel less stigmatized and more supported, we recommend some additional individual home coaching with the parents to practice the skills they are learning with their children. A home visiting coaching guide is available for those doing these home visits as well as individual manuals for the parents. The home visiting model also requires use of the self-administered manuals, and both parts will be sold together. These will be available for purchase in early November. Home visitor coaches are recommended to take the 3-day certified workshop, plus an additional day focused on the home visiting coaching protocols and methods. New PublicationsWe have a few new review articles that might interest you. One is about child play therapy and coaching for parents, teachers and children. See this article here. In addition we have a paper on partnering with schools to deliver Incredible Years programs. See this article here. |
Certification/Accreditation News |
|
|
More and more people are becoming certified or accredited as group
leaders. This is fantastic because it means you are delivering the
program with high fidelity and are likely to get results similar to our
research studies. A new procedure has been set up in the UK where certified
group leaders are getting additional training as peer coaches. In this
role they provide feedback to new group leaders on their videos of their
sessions and provide them with support, consultation and reinforcement
for their efforts at learning the new programs. It is within this
network of mutual support that group leaders find it easier to move
forward with certification. |
