Child and Parents Conversation Card Game (for children 8-16 years)

This game is made up of two card decks, one used by the child and the other used by parents. The adult and child each take turns asking a question while the other answers. Use the 3-minute pig timer to limit the amount of time for answers. Example parent deck questions include, "what do you like to do best with me?", "what are two important household rules?", "what is the best way I can help with your homework?", "what do you say to yourself to stay calm?", "what is the hardest part about being a kid?", "what would be the menu of your ultimate birthday dinner?"

Example child deck questions include, "what can I do to earn a reward?" or, "is it ever okay to tell a lie?", or, "what is the story behind my name?" or, "what do you like to do best with me?", or "what was I like as a preschooler?", or, "when do you think I can baby-sit?" or, "are there any projects we can work on together?".

Incredible Parents Conversation Card Game

This card game facilitates discussion between parents about parenting strategies and goals. This game can be played with Incredible Years parent groups or with friends, group buddies, or between partners. During parent groups, it is suggested that leaders introduce the game mid-way through the program and then play it again on the last night as part of the final session celebration. Half of the deck focuses on the foundational part of the IY pyramid and the other half comprises of questions about handling misbehavior. Parents take turns asking each other questions such as: "how do you find time to schedule some personal time for yourself?", "what is the most fun thing you do with your child?", "what is one way you used the attention principle successfully?", "what are two behaviors you look for when doing Incredible Years social coaching?", "what makes it hard for you to praise your child?", "what goals have you set for yourself in regard to parenting?".

Examples of questions from the section on handling misbehavior include: "how do you stay calm when using the ignoring strategy?", "what are two good consequences for 5-6 year olds?", "what is one principle you have learned in Incredible Years that you have used successfully?", "when you feel yourself starting to get angry, what coping self-talk do you find useful to stay respectful?".

Incredible Pig Timer

This timer can be used during child directed play. The parent can tell the child how much time they have for the play activity and then set the pig timer. The timer can also be used for the card games described above to delineate how much time each person has to respond to a question.

Parent Program Pyramid Poster

The Pyramid poster is a visual that can be used by the Group Leader with parent participants to show the sequence of the topics covered in the parent program. It provides a representation for building a strong foundation by beginning with the bottom of the pyramid, which concentrates on the positive affect, building a strong relationship with the children, and promoting children's social competence, emotional literacy and cooperative behaviors. The Pyramid poster is referred to at each group meeting to give the parents a sense of where they are in the program, what they have already learned, and what is still to come.

Build up Your Bank Account Piggy Bank Poster

This poster can be used to highlight how parents in Incredible Years parent groups are investing in their children by playing with them, coaching social and emotional skills, and praising and encouraging their child’s efforts. At the start of each parent group, the group leader can ask the parents to share a home activity they did with their child that they are proud of (this can be done in buddy pairs or with the whole group). The activities can then be written down on blank gold coins and placed on the piggy bank with the Velcro backing. The coins with text included with the poster can also be put up to illustrate a parent’s particular investment in his/her child. The fundamental purpose of the Piggy Bank poster is demonstrate the concept that when parents invest in their relationship with their child by playing and caring for them, they have a bank account they can draw on when times become more difficult and they need to impose a consequence. Moreover, this investment in their relationship is a long-term investment in their child’s emotional and social development.

Baby Brain Poster (48 neurons) (17" x 11")

This poster features a large image of a baby crawling and has Velcro siding to attach neurons. The attachable neurons with text indicate methods by which parents can strengthen the neuron connections used for building social relationships, language and cognitive development, and emotional development. This poster can be used by group leaders to explain the many ways parents are helping the development of their baby’s brain. Since babies have over 10 billion neurons at birth, each of which can make 100,000 connections, parents play an important role in strengthening the most important connections that will last over time. Some of the ways neurons are strengthened include – speaking "parentese", eye contact, mirroring babies sounds and expressions, nurturing, familiar rhythmic motion, baby proofing, predictable routines, baby aerobics, reciprocal tango dance, singing songs and staying calm.
