Incredible Years® Teacher Training Program

Teachers find themselves spending increasing amounts of time attending to students’ aggressive, hyperactive and non-compliant behaviors in the classroom. If these behaviors are ignored, or if teachers give them negative attention, they will continue to increase leading to eventual school failure and antisocial behavior. The Teacher Classroom Management Program aims to provide teachers with the skills to effectively manage their classroom and promote children’s social, emotional, and academic competence.

The Incredible Beginnings® program, a new program for day care providers and preschool teachers of children ages 1-5 years has recently been developed. It is a program using the same IY methods and processes as the Teacher Classroom Management Program and delivered in the same way. The difference is the focus on younger children’s development, promoting language development and tailoring the methods used according to each child’s developmental abilities. The use of visual prompts, body language, gestures and songs, imitation and repetition is a common theme.

What is the difference between IY TCM and Incredible Beginnings Programs?

The Incredible Beginnings® program is a program for leaders of teachers and child care providers of children ages 1-5 years old. In this program, preschool teachers and early child care providers are meeting together to discuss and share ways to provide an environment that supports children’s optimal early development (ages 1-5 years). Teaching methods discussed include using social and emotion coaching, nurturing child-directed play interactions using narrated descriptive commenting, proactive teaching with predictable routines and consistent positive behavior management strategies. All of these approaches rely on building positive relationships with children using sensitive and responsive approaches. Incredible Beginnings® Program is run similarly to Teacher Classroom Management Program, in 6 Full-Day Workshops.

The Teacher Classroom Management program is for group leaders who plan to work with teachers of children ages 4-8 years. The focus is on strengthening teachers’ classroom management strategies, and promoting children’s prosocial behavior, school readiness, and reducing children’s classroom aggression and noncooperation with peers and teachers. The program also helps teachers work with parents to support their school involvement and promote consistency between home and school.

The Teachers Promoting Social and Emotional Development Program is a supplement to the teacher programs, for teachers working with children aged 3-5 years.  It includes a leader’s manual with questions to facilitate discussion, and DVD (42 vignettes, 88 minutes).  In these vignettes, you will see teachers demonstrating how to promote language development, use social and emotion coaching, use proactive teaching strategies to manage transitions, and implement positive behavior management methods. You will see teachers motivating children with “super friend” awards, green patrols, and puppets who help children learn self-regulation and calm down skills to manage conflict.  These vignettes feature preschool teachers using Incredible Years teaching strategies and methods with culturally diverse populations in Head Start centers and an early childhood center.
