Helping Preschool Children with Autism: Parents and Teachers as Partners

This book provides parents and teachers of children on the autism spectrum (aged 2-5 years) with strategies for promoting children’s optimal social, emotional, language, and academic competence.  It includes verbal and nonverbal strategies to help caregivers to enter in children’s attention spotlight and expand their interest and joy in relationships with others.  The book includes sample adult-child social and emotion coaching scripts for interacting with children and suggestions for modeling, initiating, and prompting social behaviors and joint activities.  Also included are other connection and communication strategies such as sensory games, visual prompts and pictures, gestures, pretend and puppet play, and intentional communication.

Teachers Promoting Social and Emotional Development in Young Children Program

This program may be used as a supplement to the Incredible Beginnings Program and Teacher Classroom Management Program for teachers of children aged 3-5. It includes a leader’s manual with questions to facilitate discussion, and DVD (42 vignettes, 88 minutes). These vignettes provide examples of interactions not shown in existing programs, such as: teachers using puppets to model and practice social skills; using feeling charts and the calm down thermometer; making seamless transitions from circle time to small group activities; and promoting problem solving learning on the playground using the Wally puppet or by coaching peer problem solving.  These vignettes feature preschool teachers using Incredible Years teaching strategies and methods with culturally diverse populations in Head Start centers and an early childhood center.  Read the full program description.

Emotional Regulation Curriculum

This program may be used as a supplement to the Teacher Classroom Management Program for teachers and therapists, or by therapists using the Classroom or Small Group Dinosaur child program. This curriculum is designed to promote children’s emotional literacy, problem-solving and anger management skills during conflict situations that occur during unstructured play interactions. The DVD programs show actual situations of preschool teachers using effective classroom management strategies for reducing aggressive and oppositional behavior and strengthening young children’s social competence.

This large book can be used by teachers during circle time. The book includes scenarios from Book One of the small Wally Books with pictures that are big enough for a larger group to see. The teacher may read the problem situation and then ask the students to brainstorm possible solutions as a group. Two possible solutions are found on the back page of each problem situation so the class can compare their answers to the Wally’s solutions in the book. Tiny Turtle Puppet

This smaller hand puppet may be used in conjunction with child training programs. The Tiny Turtle Puppet may be used as a tool for teaching anger management strategies and sharing ways to calm down and work in friendly ways with others. Tiny teaches about positive self-talk, developing pleasurable and safe imaginary places, and deep breathing secrets.  Tiny Turtle is good for working with children on the autism spectrum or with children experiencing anxiety.  The Tiny Turtle puppet may also be used to explain feelings that occur when problems occur and role-play solutions encountered in the child book “Wally Learns a Lesson From Tiny Turtle.” Each puppet is sold separately.
