This study evaluated the effectiveness of problem-solving (PBS) training as an adjunct to parenting-skills (PSK) training in 21 parents assigned to a PBS group, 16 assigned to a PSK group, and 16 assigned to a waiting-list control group. At posttest, PBS and PSK Ss demonstrated significant improvements (SIs) in parenting behaviors as measured by a situation test of behavioral parenting skills, and by parent self-report of punitiveness. Both treatments resulted in SIs in child behavior problems (CBP) as measured by parent reports of 3 child behaviors of concern to them. The PSK and PBS training program resulted in significant reductions in the intensity of CBPs sampled by the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory. The program with PBS training resulted in SIs in parent attitudes concerning the children's adjustment and character and concerning parents' own functioning in the parental role. At follow-up (4–6 mo), treatment gains were maintained in both treatment groups on 4 of 7 outcome variables.
